Proxy appliances from Blue CoatWhat Blue Coat does? Blue Coat is focused on developing proxy appliances that provide powerful visibility and control of all Web communications. Blue Coat Proxy SG and ProxyAV appliances allow organizations, to rapidly deploy applications such as content filtering, spyware prevention, Web virus scanning, IM and P2P control, Web proxy and bandwidth management while actually improving Web performance. ![]() The Range The Proxy SG™ family of appliances includes the ProxySG 200 Series, 400 Series, 800 Series and 8000 Series. Based on Blue Coat SGOS™, a custom, object-based operating system with integrated caching, these proxy appliances leverage existing authentication systems to enable granular policy enforcement down to the individual user. Blue Coat Presentation: Blue Coat's end-to-end product portfolio includes powerful reporting, policy and configuration management software - delivering a scalable proxy system architecture for centralized or distributed enterprise environments. Delivered as a rack mountable appliance for simple installation and management, these ICSA-certified solutions easily integrate with existing security and network infrastructure. SMEThe ProxySG 200 provides an affordable platform for visibility, control and acceleration of web communications at remote offices with central policy administration provided by Director, plus log aggregation and concise reporting down to individual users provided by Reporter. CorporateThe ProxySG 400 also enables corporations to extend Web traffic protection and control to the network edge for branch offices, while significantly reducing the administration and management costs for securing a distributed enterprise. EnterpriseBoth the ProxySG 800 and the ProxySG 8000 were designed to meet enterprise requirements for capacity, performance, availability and centralized management. While all four series provide the same broad application support and features, the 8000 Series provides an expandable, modular platform for customizing disk size, RAM and network interface cards.
Solution Highlights
Content FilteringURL filtering, or the ability to control access to Web sites, is critical to minimizing an organization’s business risk. Inappropriate Web surfing can lead to decreased worker productivity and the introduction of viruses. Both situations can result in considerable financial costs for any company. Other security breaches occur through inappropriate Web use such as the loss of intellectual property and other proprietary information. Unsanctioned Web-based applications can also consume large amounts of network bandwidth and the viewing of adult content sites by employees can lead to costly legal actions. Spyware PreventionSpyware and adware pose security, privacy and productivity risks for the enterprise. Users, often unknowingly, download spyware - and web content providers are financially incensed to disperse spyware agents. This results in backdoors, key loggers, information collection, privacy breaches, and network abuse as spyware quietly "calls home." It also crashes browsers, slows networks and overwhelms IT help desks Web Virus ScanningViruses are no longer just sent via email, innocently visiting a web site can let viruses into your network. Allowing users access to web mail accounts like Hotmail & Yahoo also increases the risk as you can easily download an infected file from your account. Proxy AV boxes sit alongside the Proxy SG, Inbound internet traffic is passed over to the box and scanned, then passed through the proxy box to the user. Web ProxyTo maximize employee productivity, organizations need to ensure a high quality Internet experience for users. In addition, enterprises need to implement content and user policies to manage Web traffic growth, while effectively using network resources. Blue Coat secure proxy appliances are powerful, full featured solutions for both forward and reverse proxy applications. SSL ProxyDuring an SSL session, all data moving between the client and server is encrypted – including any potentially malicious traffic. Once the encrypted traffic passes through the corporate firewall on port 443 (always open and available for all SSL sessions), the data is automatically unencrypted by the client Web browser and made visible to the user. If the session has not been “infected,” there is no problem. But if there were hidden, encrypted security threats, they are now free to move through the internal enterprise network – often undetected. By positioning a ProxySG inside the corporate firewall – in the session path between the internal user and external application – the appliance can act as a secure intermediary between the remote application server and local Web client. In this type of deployment, the ProxySG will automatically set up a trusted SSL session on behalf of the browser and perform the necessary steps for authentication. Just as important, the ProxySG will terminate the session containing encrypted data coming into the enterprise. At that point, data is converted to “clear text” and automatically inspected by the ProxySG. Decisions on how to handle the data can be based on ProxySG’s advanced session control policies, which enable IT to set policies based on the who, what, where, when, and how of each user/application interaction. Any potentially malicious traffic is automatically blocked at that point, preventing any security breaches in the enterprise. Valid traffic is safely passed on to the Web browser to complete the session. Reverse ProxyProxySG for Reverse Proxy securely isolates general-purpose servers from direct Internet access, acting as an intermediary between web servers and the external clients who attempt to access them. The solution provides robust authentication and policy support, using an organization’s existing security framework to control user access. Instant Messaging ControlBluecoat SG enable you enforce policies such as key word scanning, Block by user/time of day etc. P2P ControlPeer to peer traffic (P2P) is not a legitimate business need, employees using programmes like Kazza & E-donkey are wasting time and network resources, this can be blocked at by the SGOS. Bandwidth ManagementBlue Coat ProxySG 800 and ProxySG 8000 products provide a proven, flexible way to control and apply content-based protection policies for network bandwidth.
